Why "Put a Face In It, Watch Clicks Go Up" Is Too Simple

The standard creative rule says people in ads outperform plain product shots. That's roughly true — but it dodges the questions that actually matter: Where should the face be looking so the viewer's eye lands on the product rather than on the face itself? And which expression actually transfers onto the evaluation of the product and brand, rather than just reading as "likeable"?

For this case study we focused on three sub-questions: How strongly does the gaze direction of a pictured face pull attention toward the product (gaze cueing)? Through which neurocognitive mechanism does a displayed emotion transfer onto the viewer (mirror neurons, emotional contagion)? And does a face, on balance, convert better than a plain product shot — or does it just distract?

Methodology

Nine sources were evaluated: four eye-tracking studies on gaze direction and face presence in print and banner advertising (three of them peer-reviewed), the foundational neuroscience paper on the mirror-neuron system, the original publication of emotional contagion theory, two studies using automatic facial coding or field data from real campaigns (one of them covering 175,647 consumer ratings across 421 ads), and one commercial eye-tracking study on baby faces in advertising. Every source was retrieved individually, and the cited figures were checked against the original paper or its accessible summary.

What the Sources Actually Show

Gaze direction decides where attention lands — product or face
In an eye-tracking study at the University of Sussex, researchers tracked participants' eye movements as they flipped through an online magazine with embedded ads. When the pictured model looked at the product instead of into the camera, viewers spent noticeably more time on the product itself, the brand logo, and the rest of the ad — including higher fixation counts and more repeat glances at the product image.

The gaze-cueing effect is precisely measurable — and it comes at a cost
In an eye-tracking study with 137 participants (SMI RED500 system, 120 Hz), a face looking toward the product made viewers 4.1 times more likely to fixate on the product at all (odds ratio 4.117, p = 0.009) compared with a gaze directed away from it. Purchase intent rose from M = 2.09 (gaze away) to M = 2.79 (gaze toward the product, p = 0.045). The catch: the face itself drew more than twice the fixation duration of the product on average (669.70 ms vs. 269.70 ms, p < 0.001) — and with animated faces, the gap widened even further (1,083.57 ms vs. 279.20 ms).

Face plus correct gaze direction is the strongest combination — not the face alone
An eye-tracking study on print ads shows that a face looking at the product beats both an ad without any face and a face looking at the viewer — across the entire effect chain: attention to the product and brand, ad recall, brand attitude, and purchase intent. A face without matching gaze direction does improve raw attention, but far more weakly than the combined condition.

The neurological substrate: mirror neurons fire the same watching as doing
The foundational paper on the mirror-neuron system summarizes what has been documented in macaques and humans since the 1990s: certain neurons fire not only when an individual performs an action itself, but also when it observes the same action performed by someone else. This mechanism is considered the neural basis for action understanding and imitation learning — and it supplies the neuroscientific explanation for why viewers react to a photographed facial expression at all, rather than merely registering it visually.
Technical Deep Dive

The original discovery came from the premotor area F5 and the posterior parietal cortex of macaques: the same neurons activated whether the animal reached for an object itself or watched an experimenter reach for one. In humans, imaging and stimulation studies reveal an analogous, distributed network across frontal and parietal areas. Rizzolatti and Craighero note that in humans this system extends well beyond plain action recognition, and is discussed as a basis for imitation and for automatic emotional resonance to facial expressions.

Emotional contagion: why a smile in the photo becomes a smile in the viewer
The original formulation of emotional contagion theory describes how people automatically and continuously mimic the facial expressions, voice, posture, and movements of others — and, through the afferent feedback of their own muscle movements, move emotionally closer to them. Applied to advertising: a smiling face in the image doesn't just create an impression of likeability, it actually triggers a positive emotional state in the viewer through unconscious mimicry — a state that then carries over into the evaluation of the ad and the brand.

Smiling works measurably — but only when it looks genuine
Three experiments with Brazilian consumers put numbers on the emotional-contagion effect: a smiling model instead of a neutral one improved attitude toward the ad (M = 3.77 vs. 3.25, p < 0.001), perceived trustworthiness (M = 3.31 vs. 2.95, p < 0.001), and product attractiveness (M = 3.24 vs. 2.45, p < 0.001); a mimicry effect in the viewer was demonstrated directly (χ² = 11.691, p < 0.001). Crucially, in a second experiment a genuine smile beat a posed one on trustworthiness and purchase intent (p < 0.01) — an unconvincing smile largely fell flat.

175,647 real ratings confirm the lab effect in the field — with a gender nuance
A field study covering 175,647 consumer ratings of 421 real ads across various product categories confirms that a smiling model improves brand attitude and purchase intent. The study also finds a congruence effect: among female consumers, a smiling same-gender model has the strongest effect on attitude change and purchase intent; a non-smiling male model should be avoided for a female target audience. Male consumers, by contrast, respond positively to a smile regardless of the model's gender.

Not just which emotion, but how intensely it registers, determines how long the effect lasts
Using automatic facial coding (Fraunhofer Institute's GfK EMO Scan software, capturing more than 20 frames per second), a study compared participants' real-time emotional reactions to ads of varying emotional intensity. The result: ads that triggered stronger facial reactions produced not just larger but also markedly more durable attitude shifts than emotionally weak ads — the effect held across measurement points, while it faded quickly for weakly activating ads.

The baby-gaze trick works on exactly the same pattern — and proves it outside the lab
A commercial eye-tracking study with 106 participants tested one of advertising's oldest rules of thumb: baby photos in ads. When the baby looked straight out of the image at the viewer, attention concentrated almost entirely on the baby's face — the headline and body copy were barely noticed. When the baby instead looked toward the headline or the copy, the face remained a strong attention magnet, but the headline and text received significantly more attention.

People automatically and continuously tend to mimic and synchronize with the facial expressions, voices, postures, and movements of others, and, consequently, to converge emotionally.

What This Means in Practice

For Brands

A face in the creative isn't enough — the gaze direction has to match the intended focal point. If attention should land on the product, the model (or baby) needs to look there, not into the camera.

For Agencies

Only use a smile when it reads as genuine — a visibly posed smile measurably weakens trustworthiness and purchase intent (source 6). Facial-expression checks belong in creative testing, not just A/B tests on CTR.

For Creators & Performance Marketers

Face and product compete for the same limited attention (source 2) — in small-format creatives (feed, story), a large face with no gaze cue toward the product often reduces product perception rather than boosting it.

For Product & Creative Teams

Audience congruence matters: with female audiences, a smiling same-gender model has the strongest effect (source 7) — model selection is therefore a performance question, not merely an aesthetic one.
