Why "video performs best" is the wrong question

In most media briefings, format choice gets treated like a ranking: video beats audio, audio beats print, digital beats analog. That ignores how differently the brain processes input from paper, sound, and moving images. Print engages touch and sight at the same time, which is exactly what gives it a more broadly anchored memory trace. Audio sidesteps visual competition entirely and works through emotional anchoring in auditory memory. Video exploits an evolutionarily ancient reflex: motion in the field of view automatically pulls attention toward it — before conscious thought even kicks in.

The real research question, then, isn't "which format is strongest," but: what neural time window does each format have to create its effect — and what happens once that window closes without a new stimulus arriving? For social video, that window has shrunk to a matter of seconds; for print and audio, different mechanisms operate over much longer stretches of time.

Methodology

What the sources actually show

Print beats every digital sequence tested inside the fMRI scanner
The USPS Office of Inspector General had Temple University's Center for Neural Decision Making observe participants via fMRI, eye-tracking, and biometrics while they viewed 60 ads — on postcards (print) and on tablet (digital), in various sequences. Result: physical ads, shown twice, produced stronger recall and higher subjective value than any other sequence tested — including mixed print-digital sequences. Physical ads also activated the ventral striatum more strongly, a brain region linked to value attribution and purchase intent. Faces in ads produced higher recall rates than pure scenes or text elements.

Multisensory input compensates even for real hippocampal damage
A 2023 study in Communications Biology had 10 patients with hippocampal lesions and 20 healthy controls navigate a virtual water maze — once on a screen using a joystick, once in immersive, freely walkable virtual reality with full multisensory input (self-motion, spatial depth, proprioceptive feedback). In the hippocampal patients, memory performance rose from 72.4% to 89.5% (+23.6 percentage points) under the multisensory condition; in the control group, it rose from 87.6% to 94.6% (+7.6 points) — meaning the effect was relatively larger in the damaged brains. Spatial precision also improved substantially: minus 59.9% variance in patients, minus 48.7% in controls.
Technical Deep-Dive

The authors explain the effect by proposing that congruent multisensory information shifts computation from the damaged hippocampal region to intact, extrahippocampal areas — meaning the hippocampus isn't the only place where sensory channels get fused into a stable spatial memory. Applied to print advertising with a strong tactile component (paper texture, weight, folding), this translates into: the more congruent sensory channels an ad engages at once, the more robust the resulting memory trace.

The jingle paradox: familiar music beats purpose-composed brand sounds on recall
A study in the journal Comunicación y Hombre (Jiménez-Marín, Bellido-Pérez, Ruda, 2022) played twelve audio excerpts from real TV commercials to 150 participants (72 men, 78 women, ages 18-60) and measured recall and recognition rates. Result: jingles achieved a recall rate of 78.13%, while already-existing, familiar music reached 90.47% — meaning existing music favored pure ad recall more strongly than purpose-composed jingles. The picture reversed slightly for combined product-plus-brand recognition: jingles reached a 60.66% success rate versus 54.4% for existing music.

The two formats sit in different price and performance tiers: radio delivers mass reach at a low CPM of EUR 2-8 (Germany), while host-read podcast ads — where the host personally endorses the product in their own voice, typically for 60-90 seconds — command a premium CPM of EUR 25-60, versus EUR 8-20 for programmatic/dynamic ad insertion. Direct deals with mid-tier podcasts (50,000-200,000 listeners) run EUR 1,500-8,000 per episode. The payoff for that premium: host-read ads generate recall rates 3-4 times higher than produced spots, and advertisers can expect 0.5-2% listener conversion on strong host endorsements — tracked over a long attribution window, since listeners often convert two to four weeks after hearing an ad.

Motion in the visual field isn't consciously decided on — it's processed reflexively
The foundational work by Franconeri & Simons ("Moving and looming stimuli capture attention," Perception & Psychophysics, 2003) shows, in controlled search tasks, that certain motion stimuli involuntarily pull attention toward themselves — regardless of whether the test subject is looking for them. "Looming" stimuli in particular (objects that appear to grow larger and approach the viewer) produced a reflexive shift in attention, while "receding" stimuli moving away did not do so to the same degree. The most plausible explanation: the onset of motion itself signals relevance for survival.

TikTok makes the split-second window official: 90% of the recall effect happens in six seconds
TikTok for Business states explicitly, in its official creative best-practice documentation, that 90% of ad-recall impact is generated within the first six seconds of a video. The platform additionally states that 74% of users perceive TikTok-first produced ads as more attention-grabbing than conventionally produced ad formats, associated with up to 3.3x the engagement compared to non-TikTok-first creatives. On-screen product placements produced a 25% recall uplift and a 65% brand-affinity uplift.

YouTube's own retention documentation makes drop-off points visible — and normal
In its official help article on "Key moments for audience retention," YouTube defines the "intro percentage" as the share of the audience still watching a video after the first 30 seconds. The retention curve shows four patterns: a flat line means the video was watched in full, a gradual decline shows waning interest, spikes show repeat views, and drops show abandonment or skipping ahead.
