The Problem & the Research Question
Why "video performs best" is the wrong question
In most media briefings, format choice gets treated like a ranking: video beats audio, audio beats print, digital beats analog. That ignores how differently the brain processes input from paper, sound, and moving images. Print engages touch and sight at the same time, which is exactly what gives it a more broadly anchored memory trace. Audio sidesteps visual competition entirely and works through emotional anchoring in auditory memory. Video exploits an evolutionarily ancient reflex: motion in the field of view automatically pulls attention toward it — before conscious thought even kicks in.
The real research question, then, isn't "which format is strongest," but: what neural time window does each format have to create its effect — and what happens once that window closes without a new stimulus arriving? For social video, that window has shrunk to a matter of seconds; for print and audio, different mechanisms operate over much longer stretches of time.

The Findings in Detail
What the sources actually show
The authors explain the effect by proposing that congruent multisensory information shifts computation from the damaged hippocampal region to intact, extrahippocampal areas — meaning the hippocampus isn't the only place where sensory channels get fused into a stable spatial memory. Applied to print advertising with a strong tactile component (paper texture, weight, folding), this translates into: the more congruent sensory channels an ad engages at once, the more robust the resulting memory trace.
Physical ads, shown twice, produced stronger recall and higher subjective value than any other sequence tested — including mixed print-digital sequences.

What this means in practice
Don't pit print against digital — treat it as its own memory tool: touch and repeat exposure demonstrably produce stronger recall and higher purchase intent than pure digital sequences.
Audio isn't a niche format — treat it as a cost-efficient way to hold attention over minutes rather than seconds, and remember that host-read placements carry a 3-4x recall advantage over produced spots even at their premium CPM (Source 4).
The hook has to land in the first six seconds, not in the middle of the video (Source 6) — and per YouTube's own recommendation, your strongest content belongs up front, not at the end (Source 7).
